Description

The Old Rectory is a detached house located in Orcheston St. Mary. It dates from the mid-17th century, with alterations from the 18th century and remodeling in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, featuring flint and limestone bands, and has a tiled hipped roof with brick stacks.

It stands two stories high and has a four-window front. The entrance is through a 20th-century porch located to the right of center, which has a blocked elliptical arch above it. To the left of the door are two 2-light casement windows, and to the right is one 2-light casement window. The first floor has four 2-light casements, all of which have leaded glass and segmental heads. The eaves cornice is dentilled in brick.

Attached to the left side of the house is a 20th-century garage, and there is a single-storey extension on the right. Both the left and right returns of the building are windowless. At the rear, there are 3-light and 2-light ovolo-mullioned windows, a glazed door, and a 3-light ovolo-mullioned window on the ground floor. The first floor features one 4-light and two 2-light ovolo-mullioned windows, all with hoodmoulds. The roof has three 20th-century dormers.

The interior was not accessible during the survey in October 1984, but it is reported to have been extensively altered. The building is included in the heritage listing despite the late 20th-century restoration of the entrance front and interior due to its 17th-century plan and the retention of sufficient historical features.
