Description

Durley Gate House is an estate house dating from the mid-19th century, located in Burbage. Constructed of red brick in a header bond, it features a striking diaper pattern created with yellow brick, along with brick quoining. The roof is covered with alternating bands of plain and rounded tiles. The north front exhibits approximate symmetry, centred around a wide porch that is single-storey and gabled. Cross wings extend from either end, each with a half-hipped gable. The entrance is framed by a round arch and features a boarded door. Paired sash windows with divided panes are set into the right gable, while the upper floor of the left gable incorporates three similar windows. Two gabled dormers are positioned between these windows. Open cusped bargeboards adorn all gables. The chimneys are constructed of banded brick with their heads set out. A chimney is located laterally on the left wing. A similar wing to the right forms a gable facing the road and has been replicated in a 20th-century wing that lacks the decorative diapering.
