Description
Velley House is an early 18th-century house located on Velley Hill near Corsham. The house is constructed of rubble stone with stone-tiled roofs, coped gables, and end-wall stacks to the main range, with a further chimney gable to the rear wing. The house is arranged in an 'L' shape and extends over two storeys and has an attic.
The west front is formal and features white mortar joints, flush quoins, moulded eaves, and a string course above the ground floor. It has a three-window range; the outer windows are 12-pane sashes in bead-moulded flush surrounds. The first floor centre window is a mullion-and-transom window with an architrave, replaced in the 20th century. A central 20th-century porch with a cornice and hood on brackets has been added. A lean-to is attached to the south end. The rear wall features a pair of mullion-and-transom 2-light windows on the first floor, one of which is blocked, under a single hoodmould. Below this is a 12-pane sash in a bead-moulded flush surround. The rear wing has a single-window range on its south side, comprising three recessed mullion windows with hoodmoulds. The ground floor window has been extended from three lights to four lights. To the right, there are 20th-century single-light windows on both floors. A two-light mullion window with a hoodmould is found on the first floor of the east end wall.
