Description

The Priory is an early 17th-century building, altered in the 18th, late 19th, and 19th centuries. It is three stories high and built of colourwashed brick on a brick base, with a moulded stone capping. A moulded stone string course runs above the first-floor windows, and the parapet has moulded coping. Chimneys flank the building, featuring diamond-pattern shafts. A two-story porch, slightly off-centre, is constructed of ashlar with a gable, moulded stone coping, and a finial. The first floor has a three-light stone mullioned casement, featuring 19th-century glazing. A Tudor-arched doorway has a moulded and splayed surround with carved spandrels and a drip mould. There is also a three-light stone mullioned casement with 19th-century lights on the second floor. The ground floor has four similar mullioned and transomed 19th-century casements, with one 19th-century angular oriel casement to the left and two four-light mullioned and transomed casements to the right. Windows on the ground and second floors have drip moulds. Inside, traces of 17th-century mullions can be seen on the first floor of a former rear outer wall. A front room on the north side of the first floor retains 17th-century panelling and a fireplace surround made of carved pilasters with an overmantel. The rest of the interior appears to be a 19th-century reproduction of Jacobean detailing, with some plaster ceilings potentially original. It forms a group with numbers 87 to 97 (odd).
