Description

Little Langford Model Farm consists of model farm buildings constructed around 1858 by S. Clarke for the Wilton Estate. The buildings are made of limestone ashlar, with roofs of Welsh slate and corrugated asbestos. The layout features a long north range with four projecting ranges to the south, enclosing yards on three sides.

On the north side, there is a central barn range that includes three elliptically-arched openings and one square-headed entry. To the right, there are three planked loft doors and four cusped gableted vents in the roof. Attached to the right is an open-fronted cart shed supported by wooden posts, featuring a slate roof with two gableted vents. To the left, there is a single-storey dairy with planked doors and fixed windows that have arched panels above.

The west range contains cowsheds with round-arched openings on the south gable. The east side facing the yard has stable doors and cast-iron horizontally-sliding windows with arched lights. The west yard features a lean-to shelter shed on the north side, with an ashlar wall enclosing the south side. The center of the western three ranges consists of shelter sheds, with a short stable positioned at right angles to the south end. This area has round-arched doors and a central shuttered window with a gabled loft door above. The range to the right includes round-arched stable doors and a central window with an arched panel above, with an asbestos roof, now functioning as an open cowshed with a 20th-century lean-to shelter shed on the east side. The east range has a large round-arched cart entry on the south gable, currently serving as a cowshed with a corrugated asbestos roof.

While the interiors of the buildings have been altered to accommodate 20th-century dairy farming, they still retain twin angle king post roof trusses and English bond brick partition walls. Plans for the farm are available at the Wilton Estate Office.
