Description

Manor Farmhouse is a farmhouse built around 1858 by S. Clarke for the Wilton Estate, located in Little Langford. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and ashlar stacks, designed in a Gothic style with a T-plan layout. The building is two storeys high and features a three-windowed east front with an entrance at the base of a three-stage tower situated at the angle of the wings. The entrance consists of a three-panelled pointed door topped with a square hoodmould. The second stage of the tower has shouldered sashes with hoodmoulds, while the octagonal upper stage features pointed sashes with hoodmoulds that have carved head terminals. The moulded eaves of the polygonal roof are adorned with a zigzag frieze and a weathervane.

To the right of the tower, there is a range with a group of three shouldered sashes on the ground floor and a pair of trefoil-headed sashes on the first floor. The left wing projects and includes a two-storey canted bay with trefoil-headed sashes and a battlemented parapet. The left return of this wing has pairs of trefoil-headed sashes, French windows, and a stack with offsets. The range to the left features shouldered sashes, while the right return has a large external stack with offsets, shouldered sashes on the ground floor, and trefoil-headed sashes on the first floor with dripstones. The rear of the building includes a two-storey canted bay on the left and shouldered or pointed sashes with carved hoodmoulds, along with a planked door and two half-hipped dormers in the attic.

Attached to the rear is an L-shaped single-storey range of outbuildings featuring cast-iron horizontally-sliding windows with arched lights. The carriage house has planked double doors and sashes, with a weatherboarded first floor that includes a gabled loft door. The interior has not been inspected. Manor Farmhouse remains an unaltered example of a model farmhouse with particularly good detail and occupies a prominent position overlooking the Wylye Valley.
