Description
Wolfhall Fields Bridge and Crofton Top Lock is an accommodation bridge and integral lock located on the Kennet & Avon Canal. It dates from the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The bridge follows John Rennie's standard design and is constructed of brick, featuring a stile elliptical arch, a band, a solid parapet, and piers with stone coping. The lock has brick walls on the west side and a brick chamber with brick coping. It includes two sets of double wooden gates; the top gates are equipped with mechanical ground paddle gearing, while the bottom gates have hydraulic gate paddle gearing. The Kennet & Avon Canal was built between 1794 and 1810, with John Rennie serving as the principal engineer.
