Description

Standlynch Mill is a disused mill located on the River Avon, dating from the late 18th century with some remodelling in the 19th century. The building is constructed from English bond brick, featuring a stepped plinth and vitrified headers, topped with a half-hipped tiled roof and brick stacks. It has an L-shaped plan that includes a single-storey 18th-century wing and a late 19th-century extension.

The mill has a single storey and an attic, with five windows. The entrance features a stable door in a chamfered case, with the initials MB 1698 inscribed on the lintel. To the right of the door is a planked door, and to the left are two-light casements and louvred windows. The roof has five hipped dormers, one of which contains two-light latticed leaded casements. The left side of the building has several louvred windows, while the right side features two-light casements on both the ground and first floors. The rear includes louvred windows and a semi-circular arch over the mill race on the right, with two-light casements to the left.

Inside, the mill has chamfered beams with run-out stops, a cupboard with butterfly hinges in the west room, and a six-bay roof supported by original 17th-century trusses. The tie-beam has raking struts to the collar and two tiers of butt purlins, with the upper tier featuring straight wind bracing. The initials MB belong to Maurice Bockland, associated with the original Standlynch House nearby, which was demolished around 1733. His wife was responsible for rebuilding Standlynch Chapel in 1677.
