Description

ST 96 SW 5/204

SEMINGTON LITTLETON MILL LANE (south side) Littleton Mill

29.10.76

GV II Water mill, now dwelling. C18, rebuilt early 1800s. Coursed rubble stone, shallow-pitched hipped Welsh slate roof. C20 entrance to south east gable end, C20 casements with square hoodmoulds to ground and first floors. North east front facing mill race has three C20 casements with hoodmoulds. Rear and north west gable end have similar C20 casements

Interior not accessible at time of survey, but converted to dwelling since listing in 1976 and interior remodelled. Converted from a woollen fulling mill to corn mill in 1887, barley was milled here till 1976.

Included for important association with machine-breaking riot in 1802 during which the woollen mill was burnt down, Thomas Hellicker a shearman from Trowbridge was hung in 1803 for alleged arson, but his probable innocence led to his status as a hero in Wiltshire industrial workers' history.
