Description
Littleton Mill is a water mill that has been converted into a dwelling. It dates from the 18th century and was rebuilt in the early 1800s. The building is constructed from coursed rubble stone and features a shallow-pitched hipped roof covered with Welsh slate. The southeast gable end has a 20th-century entrance, and there are 20th-century casement windows with square hoodmoulds on both the ground and first floors. The northeast front, which faces the mill race, also has three 20th-century casements with hoodmoulds. The rear and northwest gable end have similar 20th-century casements.
While the interior was not accessible during the survey, it has been converted into a dwelling since the building was listed in 1976, and the interior has been remodeled. Originally, the mill operated as a woollen fulling mill before being converted to a corn mill in 1887, and it continued to mill barley until 1976.
The mill is historically significant due to its association with a machine-breaking riot in 1802, during which the woollen mill was burned down. Thomas Hellicker, a shearman from Trowbridge, was hanged in 1803 for alleged arson, but his probable innocence has made him a hero in the history of Wiltshire's industrial workers.
