SEEND SEEND HEAD ST 95 NW 6/336 Seend Head Mill 9.1.80 GV II

Mill and mill-house, late C18 or early C19, rubble stone with red brick dressings and plain tile roof. Ridge stack. House range to left has 3-window range of cambered-head casements in brick surrounds, pairs each side, single casement to first floor centre over door in glazed porch. Brick quoins at left angle. Mill range to right has cambered-head door, up stone steps, two small casements and door. Machinery all removed, mill-wheel replaced by turbine c1935. A mill is recorded at Seend Head in 1249. In 1642 G. Somner bought a house and fulling mill at Seend Head. From the C18 to 1826 the mill was used as a dye works. (K. Rogers Wiltshire and Somerset Woollen Mills, 1976: 110; E.
