Description

The Old Malthouse is a detached house dating from the early to late 18th century. It is constructed of random rubble stone with stone slate roofing on the right-hand side and a double Roman tiled roof on the left. The building comprises two parallel ranges and has a seven-window front. The right-hand range features a double half-glazed door within a cyma-moulded architrave, positioned centrally. To the left of the door are two 2-light, cyma-mullioned casements, and to the right is a blocked 2-light and a 3-light mullioned casement. A stone string course runs above the doorway. The first floor of this range has four 2-light mullioned casements and one blocked window. The range to the left has a gabled porch with a Tudor-arched inner doorway and includes a 2-light, C19 ovolo-mullioned casement, a C20 steel casement on the ground floor, and a 2-light recessed cyma-mullioned casement and a C20 casement on the first floor. The right return features a 2-light ground floor casement and a 12-pane sash window on the first floor of the rear range. The left return has a C20 casement inserted into what was formerly a garage or cart opening. The rear of the house has double C20 doors and small casements. The interior was inaccessible at the time of survey in June 1987.
