Description
The Dovecote at Avebury Manor is a mid-16th century structure. It is built from local sarsen rubble, which was previously rendered, and features a conical stone-slate roof.
The building has a circular plan with slightly battered, roughly-coursed rubble stone walls that include some repairs in stone. On the south side, there is a low, square-headed doorway with a timber lintel and a recessed plank door fitted with strap hinges. The north side features a cambered-arched doorway with a brick surround, a timber stable-type door, and a rectangular fanlight that is a later addition. The eaves overhang, and the roof is topped with an open cupola that has its own stone-slate conical cap for pigeon entry, finished with a ball finial.
Inside, the walls are lime washed, and the space contains around 15 ranks of nesting boxes without alighting ledges, and there is no ladder present. The floor is made of stone rubble.
