Description

Manor Farmhouse is a mid-18th century farmhouse constructed of brick with a tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with attics and features a three-by-three bay layout. The west front showcases three gables, with the central gable being wider and slightly set forward. The original entrance on the ground floor has been replaced with a window. There is a plat band and a small 19th-century porch located in the right bay. The gables are scrolled at the base and have moulded stone copings. The windows are stone-mullioned and framed, with transomes on the rear windows. The gables also feature oval stone-framed windows. The side and rear elevations include a central pediment with blind oval windows on the sides and a Diocletian window at the rear. A late 18th to early 19th-century bay extension is present at the rear, along with a late 19th-century roughcast block added to the north. The porch door is made of oak and dates from the 16th to 17th century, having been brought from a house in Imber. Inside, there is a staircase on the south side with a tall stair window, and an iron fire plate from the Sun Fire Office. Until around 1978, the farm featured a notable range of large timber-framed thatched barns, which were described by Cobbett in his "Rural Rides" (1830), but were demolished by the Ministry of Defence. There was also a furze house that was demolished earlier.
