Description

The Parish Church of St Mary was founded in 1160, likely on the site of an earlier church mentioned in 1091. From this early period, a doorway in the west tower remains, featuring one order of zig-zag decoration, one order of colonettes, zig-zag voussoirs, and a cable-moulded hood with imposts. The west respond of the north arcade, which has a fat half-column with a scalloped capital, also dates back to this time, while the rest of the arcade was destroyed by a fire in 1653.

The west tower, built in the 15th century, is constructed of ashlar and features a crenellated parapet, mullioned windows with hood moulds, a weather vane, and clocks. The exterior walls of the nave and two aisles are also from the 15th century, but the interior was destroyed in the 1653 fire and was rebuilt, merging the nave and north aisle. The church has six bays of windows with Perpendicular tracery, buttresses, and a south porch. The north wall was heightened in 1653 to match the nave level. The south arcade, built in 1653, consists of five round arches on large circular piers with necking, spirally scalloped capitals, and drop finials at the corners of the square abaci. This arcade is considered the most remarkable feature of the church and resembles contemporary church architecture in the Netherlands. A chancel was added in 1874 by the architect Street.
