Description

The Old School, located on Netherhampton Road in West Harnham, is a former school and school house built around 1850. It has a T-shaped plan, with the former school hall situated to the east and the house at a right angle to the west. The building is constructed of ashlar stone. The east end of the hall features a gable end with coping and a finial, along with a three-light pointed window that has stone mullions and tracery, topped by a drip mould with carved stops. To the right, there is a projecting gabled porch, which also has a drip mould over a pointed arched door.

On the south elevation of the hall, there is a coved cornice at the eaves, decorated with ball flowers and two finely carved dogs. This elevation includes two three-light stone mullioned windows with cusped heads and flat drip moulds above. The adjoining gable end of the house features two-light stone mullioned windows on the first floor, with drip moulds on carved stops, a trefoil in the gable, and canted head roofed stone bay windows on the ground floor.

The west front of the building has two-light stone mullioned windows on both floors, with gables above on the first floor and drip moulds on the ground floor. The central doorway has a shaped head with a trefoil above and a pointed drip mould on carved stops. The building is picturesque, enhanced by grouped chimneys.
