Description

Old Mill Flats and the Three Crowns Public House are located on a corner site at Middle Street and Tower Path in West Harnham. This irregular group of picturesque buildings dates from the late 18th century to the early 19th century.

Old Mill Flats is a three-storey house made of red brick, featuring a hipped slate roof. The southwest front facing Middle Street has three windows on the upper floors and two on the ground floor, all with recessed sashes and flat stucco arches that include keystones. The central entrance has a 19th-century four-panel door set in a panelled reveal, topped with a rectangular fanlight. The doorcase is adorned with pilasters, scroll brackets, and a moulded cornice hood. There is also a secondary door to the left with four flush panels. The southeast return front facing Town Path has one window.

The Three Crowns Public House, which is an irregular earlier wing set back at right angles to the main building facing Town Path, is two storeys high and also made of red brick with an old tile roof. It features large tripartite sash windows with intact glazing bars on both floors and a glazed and panelled door to the right. There is a simple storey wing projecting towards the road at right angles, topped with a hipped slate roof and a large canted bay window. The sash lights have moulded surrounds, and there is a moulded cornice at the southeast end, which overhangs a small feeder stream leading to the river. Extending at right angles to the northeast is a largely stone rubble structure with a slate roof, possibly an earlier outbuilding.

Old Mill Flats and the Three Crowns Public House form a group with Old Mill Cottage.
