Description
The Church of St Nicholas is an Anglican parish church located in Biddestone Slaughterford. It dates from the 15th century, with significant rebuilding occurring in 1823 and further alterations in 1883. The church is constructed of ashlar stone and features stone tiled roofs with coped gables and saddlestones.
The building includes a small two-stage tower from the 15th century, which has a three-sided stair turret that rises only to the bell stage. The west window is designed in the renewed Perpendicular style and includes a hoodmould, while the bell stage has a dripmould and two-light square-headed cusped openings on each face, adorned with pierced stone panelling. There are blank panels beneath the west and north side openings, and an upper dripmould runs beneath the embattled parapet, which is topped with corner pinnacles.
The nave, chancel, and south porch were rebuilt in 1823 by G. Forder of Winchester, featuring hollow eaves moulding. The north side of the nave has two windows, while the south side has one window and an embattled porch. The chancel has windowless sides and an east window. All windows were filled with Perpendicular style tracery in 1883, complete with hoodmoulds above.
Inside, the church has a plain interior with plastered walls and roofs, a chamfered chancel arch, and later 19th-century fittings. An inscription notes the rebuilding in 1823 after the church had been disused for two centuries.
