Description
Southbroom House, formerly listed as Southbroom Place, is part of the Devizes Secondary Modern School and dates back to 1773. It is constructed from Bath stone and features a tall central symmetrical block of two storeys, flanked by long side wings that were likely symmetrical originally but now have many altered windows. The entrance front is effectively screened by shrubs and trees.
The north-west front is made of ashlar stone, showcasing chamfered quoins on a wide projecting plinth with slab coping. It has a moulded cornice with a parapet and coping, topped with a stone tile roof. The three central bays slightly project and are adorned with a pediment that features a central carved stone cartouche of Arms. On the first floor, there are seven windows with projecting sills and stone architrave surrounds, while the ground floor has six windows without architraves and a projecting central porch. This early 19th-century porch is made of stone and has triple angle semi-engaged Doric columns at the front and sides, with a quadrant column at the junction with the main wall, all supporting an entablature with a blocking course and standing on a projecting plinth. The entrance features double six-panel flush doors and a wrought iron scroll pattern lamp bracket projecting over the door.
The side wings are also two storeys high, with a projecting string and parapet that aligns with the sills of the first-floor windows of the main block. The original windows were likely all arched, featuring two-light casements on the ground floor with oval cart wheel windows above. This design still applies to the left-hand wing on the ground floor and partially to the right-hand wing, although many windows have been altered to two-light square casements. The garden front is similar but plainer, featuring a central fall height canted bay. Modern school buildings have been added on either side of the house. The grounds retain fine trees, particularly around the house, which serve as an important background feature to Devizes Green.
