Description

This is a group of five chest tombs located close to the south wall of the south chapel of the Church of St Andrew in Chippenham. They date from the 18th century and consist of one row of three tombs with a pair situated to the east.

The first tomb, approximately 2 meters from the wall, features a plinth, a cyma-moulded flat top, a cornice, and an entablature. It has shields with ogee bases at each end and two on the sides, which are highlighted by pilasters with raised and fielded panels. The second tomb, about 4 meters from the wall, is similar in design. The third tomb, located around 7 meters from the wall, also shares this design but includes foliate carving on the pilasters. The fourth tomb, also approximately 7 meters from the wall and situated to the east, is similar in style. The fifth tomb, located about 9 meters from the wall toward the east and associated with the Prior family, is similar but features formal flower carving on the central pilaster.
