Row Of 5 Chest Tombs Approximately 2 Metres To East Of Church Of St Andrew

This is a row of five chest tombs located approximately 2 meters east of the Church of St Andrew in Chippenham. They date from the late 18th century and are situated close to the east wall of the chancel.

The first tomb is about 4 meters from the south-east corner of the chancel and features a cyma-moulded flat top with a cornice and entablature. It has fluted pilasters that frame two ogee-based shields with foliate tops on the sides, a shield at the west end, and scrolled carving at the east end.

The second tomb, located about 2 meters from the east wall of the chancel, has the date 1792 visible. It includes a plinth and a stepped barrel top with a reeded edge, along with recessed oval panels that have foliate spandrels on the sides and reeded rounded corners.

The third tomb, also approximately 2 meters from the east wall of the chancel, has a flat moulded top with raised oval panels on the sides, an ogee-based shield at the west end, and a small domed vertical oval framed in scroll carving at the east end.

The fourth tomb is about 2 meters east of the north corner of the chancel and is similar to the third tomb, featuring an oval panel at the east end.

The fifth tomb is approximately 4 meters north-east of the chancel and resembles the third tomb, but has a plain west end.
