Description

The wall, gate piers, railings, and bollards surrounding the churchyard of the Church of St Andrew were built in the mid-19th century. The structure features a squared limestone rubble wall topped with moulded freestone coping. It includes ashlar gate piers, wrought-iron railings, and cast-iron bollards. The revetment wall is approximately 3 meters high and 100 meters long, forming the eastern boundary of the churchyard along St Mary Street. At the north-east corner, the wall rises to meet gate piers with low plinths, cornices, and pyramidal caps, connecting to the National School on St Mary Street. Here, the wall projects to create a platform about 1.5 meters square at the top of a flight of 12 stone steps, which are flanked by a handrail attached to the wall and plain railings on the outer edge. In the south-east corner, there is a smaller platform with railings leading to 7 steps. One of the gate piers supporting the inner rail is part of No. 15 St Mary Street. Two tapered bollards separate the entrance to the churchyard; the southern bollard has a casting fault, and the northern side has deteriorated. Both flights of steps ascend from the south.
