Description
The Atwood monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 13 meters north of the north wall of the Church of St Nicholas in Winsley. It dates from around 1810 and is constructed of ashlar stone. The tomb has an elongated hexagon shape with reeded strips at the angles and an oval plaque on the south side featuring rosettes in the spandrels. The design includes husk drops in canted sections and a high raised concave curved and fluted top crowned with an urn. The south side bears an inscription dedicated to Richard Atwood of Turleigh Manor, who died in 1808. This monument is similar in style to the one for the architect and builder Thomas Warr Atwood, who died in 1775, located in Weston churchyard, Bath, and is believed to have been created by T. Baldwin. Thomas Warr Atwood was the younger brother of Richard Atwood.
