Description
21 and 23 Church Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and flats. It dates back to around 1500 and was altered in the mid-19th century, with restoration occurring in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of squared, dressed limestone, with brick gable and rear lateral stacks, topped by a pantile roof. It has a single-depth plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and features a three-window range. The facade is double-fronted and includes pilaster strips, a plat band, and a frieze. There is a 20th-century door and early 19th-century shop windows on either side, which have panelled jambs, a fascia, and a cornice, each with three plate-glass panes. The first floor has 6/6-pane sash windows, and there is a central gabled casement dormer. Inside, notable features include a four-bay roof with a threaded ridge and wind braces between two sets of chamfered, stopped purlins, as well as joists laid flush with the tops of the ties. The ground floor has moulded 16th-century axial and lateral beams, although the corner bosses have been removed.
