Description
Priory Cottage is a house dating from the 16th to 17th century, constructed of stone with pebbledashing, timber framed gables, and a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of two parallel ranges that face the street. The left range has one bay with a front stack and a cellar that has been extended forward, while the adjoining range has two bays with a lateral stack. The windows are leaded within timber casements, with some 17th century iron casements, and feature timber lintels.
Inside, there are stacks of axe dressed ashlar stone. The right wing includes a fireplace with chamfered stone jambs and a chamfered cambered oak lintel. The stack in the left range boasts a fine overmantel dating to around 1600. The staircase between the ranges has late 17th century turned balusters. The ceilings are supported by deep chamfered beams. This building is believed to be located on the site of the small hospital of St. John, which was founded in 1266 and dissolved before 1500. Some of the internal dressed stone, including one with a recessed curved handrail, is likely reused from the hospital.
