Description
The Angel Mill is a factory built in 1801, likely the earliest in Wiltshire designed to be powered by a steam engine. The main front is notable, although it has been partially obscured by later alterations. The building has four storeys and an attic, featuring ten ranges of windows. The central section has a break of four windows topped with a pediment that includes a cartwheel window, which formerly housed a clock, in the tympanum. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, featuring standard two-light windows with segmental heads, stone mullions, raised stone surrounds, and small panes. The attic is illuminated on the east side by two long rows of dormers. The boiler and engines were located at the north end of the building. A wing, built in 1856, projects at right angles to the north and has eight ranges of windows, four storeys of a uniform design, and is also made of red brick with stone dressings. The ground floor of this wing is obscured by later sheds.
