Description

Ludgershall Cross and railings is a village cross with enclosing railings, dating from around 1300 and 1897. The Cross, which is a Scheduled Monument, is made of limestone and consists of two steps and a base block that supports the lowest section of an elaborately carved cross shaft. This shaft is much weathered and features scenes depicting the Ascension, the Descent from the Cross, the three Maries, and the briefing of the Apostles. The cross is set on a brick base and is surrounded by wrought iron railings that include a frieze and crestings, with corner stanchions ending in a crown and a cross on each center stanchion.
