Description

The Hermitage, at Hyde Close, is a 17th-century building that was altered in the early 18th century. It is constructed of multi-coloured brick and is two storeys high with an attic. The front has three bays, with two large gables featuring elaborate 17th-century bargeboards. A central gabled dormer window has a wall face rising to the window’s top. The roof is tiled, with a brick band separating the floors. There are two leaded casement windows in the attic, each with a brick relieving arch. The first floor has three windows, and the ground floor has two; these are flush-architraved sash windows with intact glazing bars, each with a segmental relieving arch. Two doorways are present, one central and one on a left-hand extension. Each doorway has six fielded panels and an architrave surround, framed by Doric pilasters on pedestals, with a flat, deep moulded hood supported on shaped brackets. The interior contains extensive fielded panelling and an early 18th-century staircase with turned balusters.
