Description

Dene Cottage is a detached 18th-century cottage located on the south-east side of Dene in Lockeridge. The front is brick, while the gable and rear are constructed of rubble, with one-third brick and two-thirds sarsen stone. It has a hipped thatched roof with a main brick stack positioned off-centre, and smaller, taller stacks to the left. The cottage follows a three-cell plan, with a later extension to the left, built of sarsen and thatched. The main building is two storeys high, featuring two-light casement windows with segmental brick heads. A three-light casement window is situated to the right of the front door on the ground floor. A pair of three-panel bead flush doors sit under a thatched porch positioned opposite the main stack. A planked door serves the extension, along with a one-light and a two-light casement window, and a square hatch. The interior retains crude chamfered spine beams and a winder stair. When inspected in January 1986, the cottage was awaiting renovation but was considered a characteristic example in an important village setting.
