Description
Manor House, built around 1600 for Richard Danvers, features significant extensions from 1904 and 1912. The structure is made of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and the lower part of the porch. It has stone-tiled roofs. The main block is two stories with an attic, designed symmetrically with reception rooms on either side of a central entrance and a rear wing. A two-story porch is present, and there is a forward wing on the left, built in the 20th century, which has five bays and also includes attics. To the right of the main block is an independently constructed 18th-century brick library, which also has a stone-tiled roof.
The main elevation features ovolo moulded stone mullioned windows, with three-light windows and a transom on the ground floor, three-light windows on the first floor, and two-light windows in the attic, all adorned with hollow moulded labels. The attic windows are set in large gables. The porch contains two-light mullioned windows and is gabled, topped with a square block finial that is carved with the name Matthew Smith and the date 1698. A small closet window is located at the left end. The building has a central stack and a subsidiary stack between two rooms of the rear wing. The forward wing matches the main block in all details, creating a cohesive group.
Inside, all rooms of the main building are fully panelled, featuring heavy cornices that are broken forward in stages over fine chimneypieces. There is a stone fireplace with carved spandrels in the end room of the rear wing and a notable chimneypiece in the library.
