Description

No 48 High Street is a house and shop that originated as a 15th-century hall house, with alterations made in the 16th century and further changes in the late 19th century. The building features square-panelled timber-framing with painted brick nogging set on a dressed stone plinth, which has buttresses. The ground floor has been partly rebuilt in brick, and the roof is covered with stone slates. There is a stone stack on the cross wing and a brick stack on the right gable end of the main range.

The structure is two-storey with a two-window layout. The main range includes a 19th-century gabled porch with a planked door, and to the right are two early 20th-century two-light casements. The first floor has a 5-light leaded casement. The cross wing on the left has a 19th-century brick ground floor that is flush with the jettied first floor, featuring a 4-panelled door and an early 20th-century shop front, along with a 20th-century cross window above. The left return displays a large lateral stone stack with offsets, while the right return showcases timber-framing with rubble stone infilling, small chamfered lights, four blocked openings, and one open light.

At the rear, there are single-storey additions to the main range, and the cross wing contains leaded casements. Inside, the former hall features a 16th-century inserted ceiling with moulded cross beams and blocked open fireplaces. The ground floor of the cross wing has been altered for use as a shop.
