Description

The Old Rectory is a parsonage house, now a private residence, dating from the 15th century with alterations made in 1836 by T.M. Shurmer. The building is rendered and colourwashed, featuring slate roofs and an 'L' shaped plan. The east wing contains a medieval hall and parlour, while the north wing, added in 1836, replaces the probable northern end. The entrance is through a 20th-century polygonal tiled porch located in the re-entrant angle. The earlier sections of the building have paned casement windows, while the north wing has a two-bay elevation to the south, divided by full-height pilasters, and features 12-pane and 6-pane sash windows, with the lower windows slightly recessed. The low-pitched slate roof is hipped at the ends and has a central stack.

Inside, the south end bay of the east wing includes the medieval hall, which was ceiled in the 16th century and features moulded cross beams. On the east side, there is a two-light square-headed window with cinquefoil cusping. A stack was inserted into the hall in the late 16th to early 17th century, located in the south-west angle, and it has a mid-17th century carved overmantel. The adjoining bay contains the parlour, with a longitudinal passage on the east side. The structure features closed tie beam trusses with a central post supporting a cambered collar and curved struts to the principals. There are two tiers of purlins with windbraces on the upper tier, and the timbers are smoke blackened. The 19th-century section of the house includes a rear stair with a mahogany handrail on turned newels.
