Description

The Close is a house dating from the later 17th century and around 1800. It is constructed of flint and brick, with a tiled roof. The house likely began as a central hall bay with a service room to the left and a cross parlour wing on the right. An outshut was added to the centre around 1800, and the front elevation was rebuilt in three stages. The front entrance features a 6-panelled door, with glazed upper panels, beneath a wooden Tuscan portico dating from around 1800. Various timber casement windows have leaded glazing. There are two dormers to the front and one to the rear. The roof is hipped, sloping down over the outshut to the rear.

Inside, the central bay retains a double ovolo moulded spine beam, with a single ovolo beam in the right bay, which is now a kitchen, alongside an added gable stack from around 1800. The left bay, formerly a service room and now a drawing room, has bar chamfer stops. The stair in the outshut has bulbous newels and shaped balusters. Timber framed partitions divide the upper floor and a 17th century stair leads to the attic, featuring wavy splat balusters. The roof is of double purlin construction, with a lower butt and an upper clasped purlin.
