Description
East Grafton War Memorial is a First World War memorial with additions for the Second World War. It is situated in the center of a gravel path within a circular landscaped area, right next to the Grade II-listed Lychgate and Railings at the entrance to the parish churchyard. To the south-east lies the Grade II*-listed Church of St Nicholas.
The memorial is made of granite and features a tall, Celtic wheel-head cross adorned with interlaced knot work designs carved in relief on the cross-head and part of the shaft. The segments of the wheel between the cross arms display the inscription, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD" in incised lettering. The cross stands on a tapering four-sided plinth, which is placed on a rectangular single-step base. The outward faces of the base are made of roughly-dressed stone with diagonal lines carved into them.
The plinth features inscriptions and names in incised lettering. The north-west face states, "IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES WHILE SERVING DURING THE WAR 1939 – 1945" followed by six names. The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on the south-east face of the plinth, which reads "1914 – 1918" followed by nineteen names.
