Description
The George Inn is a coaching inn located on Tinhead Road in Edington. It dates from the early 18th century and 19th century. The building is constructed of painted brick and features a stone slate roof with brick stacks, forming an L-plan layout. It is two stories high and has three windows across the front. There is a planked door to the right of the center, a 4-light casement window with shutters to the left, and a 15-pane sash window to the right. A three-brick dentil plat band runs along the first floor, which includes one blind window and two 2-light casements.
To the right, there is a projecting wing that is partly from the 19th century, featuring a 6-panelled door and 19th-century three-light casements on either side. The first floor of this wing has a blocked window, a 2-light casement, and a 3-light casement. The right return has a planked cellar door and a 3-light casement on the ground floor, while the rear of the building has lean-to extensions. There is also a 19th-century range parallel to the rear of the main structure, which includes 16-pane sashes and planked doors. Inside, the inn features chamfered beams. Tinhead Road was previously part of the turnpike route between Bath and Salisbury, crossing Salisbury Plain.
