Description

The Monastery Garden is a Grade I listed cottage built against a former monastic wall. It likely dates from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and extensions added in the late 19th century and 1930s. The structure is made of rubble stone or painted English garden wall bond brick, topped with stone slate roofs featuring half-hips and brick or stone stacks. It has a T-plan layout and is two storeys high, with a five-window west front that faces the gardens. The entrance features a half-glazed 20th-century door, flanked by two and three-light segmental-headed casements. The first floor has five 2-light casements, with the two left-hand bays being additions from around 1930. The rear of the cottage is integrated into the walls of the former Priory of Bonshommes and is constructed of rubble stone. The first floor of the main range has 19th-century two-light mullioned casements. A 19th-century rear wing includes 2-light mullioned casements on the north side and a 3-light mullioned and transomed window on the south side, with a 20th-century door in a recessed porch below and a blocked window on the east side. Inside, the cottage features deeply chamfered beams with plain stops, and the first floor retains an 8-panelled wainscot door. In the late 19th century, the house served as a tea-room.
