Description
The West Portal of Middlehill Tunnel is a railway tunnel entrance built in 1840 by I. K. Brunel for the Great Western Railway. It is constructed of ashlar stone, with some later repairs made in brick. The entrance features a classical archway made of ashlar, flanked by curving retaining walls, and is terminated by a circular pier on the south side and an octagonal pier on the north side. The main arch is rusticated and includes a heavy moulded console keystone, set back between the piers, which each have a recessed panel featuring massive fasces. An elemental Doric cornice projects over the piers, and there is an ashlar parapet with a moulded cornice. The design of this portal is identical to that of the East Portal.
