Description
The East Portal of Middlehill Tunnel is a railway tunnel entrance built in 1840 by I.K. Brunel for the Great Western Railway. It features ashlar stonework with some later brick refacing. The entrance has a classical archway made of ashlar, flanked by curving retaining walls that have been refaced in brick and end in circular piers. The main arch is rusticated and has a heavy moulded console keystone, set back between the piers, each of which has a recessed panel featuring massive fasces. There is an elemental Doric cornice that breaks forward over the piers, along with an ashlar parapet that has a moulded cornice. The design of this portal is identical to that of the West Portal.
