Description

Catridge Farmhouse dates from the 16th and 17th centuries and is a timber-frame and rubble stone building with a stone slate roof, half-hipped to the west. It has two ridge stacks and a coped gable with an end stack. The farmhouse comprises two sections under a single roof. The eastern section, dating to the 16th century, features unusual timber-framing within rubble stone end walls. The western section, from the 17th century, is constructed of rubble stone and includes a through passage adjacent to the earlier range, and a two-storey gabled porch. The earlier range has two gabled timber-framed bays on each side, with rubble stone between on the front and close-studded framing continued to the rear. The gables are at eaves over a projecting wall-plate, supported by wall posts carried forward of the main wall-face from stone corbels. A rubble stone plinth is also present. Casement windows are visible, and some original, chamfered timber mullions are on the rear elevation. The rear gables have deep eaves on curved brackets. A similar timber-framed dormer is on the roof slope of the hipped end-wall lean-to. The 17th-century range has moulded oak frames to the through passage doors on each side. A two-storey gabled porch is located at the front, with a roughcast upper floor, deep eaves, and is carried on two ashlar square piers. To the left of the porch, a dormer gable is situated above two windows and an end door below. The end wall has a boarded loading door. The rear elevation has a dormer gable with a timber-mullion three-light window above a casement, and a catslide roof carried over a ground floor projection to the right. Inside the original range, there are heavy intersecting, chamfered, and stopped spine beams to the left of the through passage. Plank doors with original ironmongery are found throughout the farmhouse.
