Description
Woodman's Lodge is a lodge built around 1840 to 1850, likely designed by J. Thomson for Joseph Neeld as part of the Grittleton estate. The lodge is constructed from squared rubble stone with a stone slate roof. It is built in a picturesque Tudor style and extends over 1½ storeys.
The north front features a central chimney-breast with a single light on the first floor and a hoodmould, with dripcourses on either side over the ground floor two-light windows with hoodmoulds. The dripcourse alters to corbelling over a round arched side entry into a west porch. The west end showcases a large, moulded round-arched entry on the ground floor, with a slightly projected first floor above. A canted ashlar three-light oriel with a hipped stone slate roof sits above the entry. The porch has arched openings to the north and south, containing a 20th-century door within a plain arched doorway. The south front is characterised by a central double-shouldered gable with a single light above, along with ground floor two-light windows with hoodmoulds and dripcourses. An arch leads into the porch at the left end. The east end features a first-floor ashlar triangular oriel and a ground floor door.
A link wall, dated 1975, connects the lodge to an original outbuilding featuring a half-hipped roof. Within this link wall, a reset original front door is displayed, bearing the initials "I.N." on the handle.
