Description

Old Thatched Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the 17th century, with remodels and extensions made in the 18th and 19th centuries, and further extensions in the late 19th to early 20th centuries. It features painted brick construction and a thatched roof with half-hipped ends, along with a brick axial stack. The layout consists of a three-room plan, with the central bay heated by the axial stack, which appears to be the oldest part of the building. A narrow bay was added on the northwest end around the late 19th to early 20th centuries.

The cottage is one storey with an attic and has an asymmetrical northeast front that includes three windows and three lunette-shaped attic windows. All windows are casements with glazing bars. There is a doorway to the left of the center, which features a late 19th to early 20th century gabled open wooden porch with an arch and a plank door. The right-hand gable end has applied timber-framing. At the rear, the left side of the back wall is plastered and set back.

Inside, the left room has a ceiling and a plastered axial beam, along with a corner fireplace that has a 20th-century brick chimneypiece. The central room features a large chamfered axial beam and unchamfered joists, with a fireplace that has a cambered timber bressumer with a straight-cut stop, though it has been cut off at one end with a 20th-century brick fireplace inserted. The attic chambers are ceiled, and there is a closed truss over the right-hand partition with large principals and wattle infilling below the collar, while the common rafter couples appear to be intact.
