Description

Baytree Cottage is a cottage dating from around the mid to late 17th century, with an extension added in the 18th century. It features a plastered timber frame, with the south end partially weatherboarded. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with corrugated iron sheets, having a gabled end that was formerly half-hipped. There is a brick axial stack.

The cottage has a small two-room plan, with both rooms accessible from doorways in the gable ends. The larger room on the right (north) is heated by the axial stack, while the smaller unheated room on the left (south) appears to be the 18th-century addition. The building is one storey with an attic, featuring one window on the east elevation and two on the west. Each gable end has an attic window, with the south end also having a 20th-century ground floor window and door. Most windows are late 19th or 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars, while the south end includes a small six-pane wrought iron window in the gable.

Inside, there are two timber frame bays; the original north bay has wall studding and tension braces, while the later south bay features lighter scantling studs. The principal room to the north has a chamfered cross-beam without stops, unchamfered joists, and a fireplace that has been blocked with a later grate. The small unheated south room has exposed joists but lacks a main beam. A ladder staircase rises from the north room, with a three-panel door at the bottom fitted with wrought iron strap hinges. The north chamber displays large exposed wall plates, tie-beams, wall studs, tension braces, and common rafters, with the roof apex ceiled. The roof structure includes clasped purlins and collars pegged to the principals, while the south bay is exposed and lacks principal rafters.
