Description

Brook House is a 15th-century timber-framed and plastered house located in Great Waltham. It features cross wings at both the north and south ends, with alterations made in the 16th century and extensive restoration work carried out subsequently. The south wing slightly projects to the front, and its upper storey is jettied across the entire façade, supported by exposed joists. The original timber-framing remains visible on the north, west, and south sides of the building. The house has two storeys, with casement windows featuring lattice leaded lights; most are reconstructions or copies, although some original windows survive. Modern pargetting (decorative plasterwork) is visible on the front, notably a band above the jettied upper storey. The tiled roof is punctuated by two tall chimney stacks, one with four octagonal shafts and the other with two, both of which were rebuilt or largely restored in the 1930s. The interior features exposed timber framing and includes a good linenfold panelled door. Adjacent to the west end is a 16th-century tithe barn originally located at Dunmow, which was re-erected on the present site as an extension to the house.
