Description
Black Chapel is one of the few remaining "peculiar" chapels, which means it is outside the authority of the diocesan bishops. It is believed to be a monastic chapel, probably Augustinian, and dates from the late 15th century. Attached to it is a priest's house, currently occupied by the caretaker.
The chapel is a small timber-framed structure that consists of a nave, a 19th-century aisle on the north side, and a tiny chancel. The nave has four unequal bays, and the 19th-century windows on the south side have pointed heads that rise above the roof level, enclosed by three gabled dormers. At the west end, there is a small bell cote faced with cedar shingles. The chancel comprises two small bays, each with a small window in the wall.
The interior is particularly interesting and has changed little since the 18th century. On the north side of the nave, there are twelve 15th-century benches, while the south side features 18th- to 19th-century box pews that incorporate some 17th-century panelling, along with a double decker pulpit. At the west end, there is a small gallery that contains a tiny barrel organ, which is probably over 100 years old. Between the nave and chancel is a 15th- to 16th-century screen with nine bays and traceried heads. The roof of the nave originally had tie beams, but these have been cut off to form hammer beams. Additionally, there is a miniature font. The building was restored after suffering bomb damage during the Second World War.
