Description

Wilcot Manor House is a manor house that dates from the early 17th century, with 18th-century and later alterations. It is constructed of brick and features a tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a central block of three bays flanked by cross wings at both ends, and a stair located in the right re-entrant angle at the rear. There is also a service wing on the left side. The main facade faces west and was remodeled in the mid-18th century, featuring an entrance in a large glazed porch added around 1920. The windows are twelve-paned sashes from the early 20th century, with gauged brick lintels that extend up at the center to form a residual flush key. The roofs are hipped, and there are tall panelled brick stacks.

Inside, the central hall saloon contains an interesting stone fireplace from around 1600, which has a fascia carved with grotesques and foliage. There is a fine staircase around a well with twisted balusters that extends to the attic level. The first-floor landing features 17th-century panelling, likely originally from the hall. The main reception rooms in the right (south) wing have inlaid marble and mid-18th-century marble and wood fireplaces, which may have been imported, with some also present on the first floor. The house is likely built on the site of the Domus Optima mentioned in the Domesday Book and later served as a manor for the Bishops of Salisbury.
