Description
Vine House is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a detached house. It has a core that dates back to the 17th century, with significant alterations made in 1726, as indicated by a date on a bracket within the later porch. There have also been changes and additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features squared and coursed rubble, with flush rusticated dressed stone quoins on the central block, while the end wings are made of brick. The left wing has timber framing and brick nogging on the first floor, with wooden lintels and stone slate roofs. The central range has end stacks with fluted stone bases and brick caps. The house has a T-shaped plan, consisting of core ranges in the center and left, a 19th-century wing on the right, and 20th-century extensions at the rear.
The south front has a two-storey and attic central block with two windows, flanked by two-storey, one-window end wings. Most windows are 20th-century, three-light small pane casements, except for a 19th-century sash window with marginal glazing on the first floor of the right wing. Below this sash window is a two-leaf French window with a segmental head. The central gabled porch, added in the 20th century, is made of stone with weatherboarding under the gable and features a two-leaf plank door, with a blocked window above.
Inside, there is 17th-century panelling on the south wall of the central lower room, and a complete panelled room on the first floor of the central block, which includes a carved frieze. It is believed that the house once served as a Moravian church, and John Wesley is reputed to have preached there.
