Description
The gates and gatepiers to Compton Park House, along with the attached garden walls, are located to the southwest of the house. The walls to the north also enclose the churchyard on the west side and extend south to a second pair of gatepiers. The walls may date back to the 16th century, while the gatepiers are from the 18th century. The driveway features dressed limestone square gatepiers with moulded cappings and attractive cast iron double gates adorned with anthemions and spearheads. There is a pedestrian gateway to the right with a Tudor-arched chamfered head. The gatepiers at the southern end of the wall are square and topped with ball finials. The wall itself is between 2 and 3 metres high, with pitched stone coping, although part of the southern section has been replaced with concrete coping. There is a planked doorway in the wall to the south of the main gates that leads to the churchyard. These walls are a significant feature of the group of structures surrounding the Church of St Michael and Compton Park House at the north end of the village.
