Description
The Cemetery Chapel, built in 1862 by C.J. Phipps of Bath, is constructed from limestone rubble, banded with ashlar and cut siltstone, and features a banded slate roof. The chapel has an apsidal plan and is supported by simple buttresses. It includes a boarded west door with intricate ironwork and a cross in the tympanum of a banded pointed arch, which is set on columns with stiff-leaf capitals and red sandstone ringed shafts. Above the entrance, there is a two-light west window and an attached belltower on the north side, which has a pyramidal roof and timber louvred openings. The chapel also features small unmoulded lancets and a small vestry on the north side. Inside, the chapel is unplastered, showcasing a truss over the base of the apse and trussed rafters. Mandorlas flank the chancel, depicting a pelican in piety and the Agnus Dei. This is a very accomplished design.
