Description

Thor House is a house with a shop located on Bolton Street in Lower Brixham, dating from the early 19th century. It features solid roughcast walls and a slated roof, with a rendered chimney on the right side wall. The building is single-fronted and likely has a double-depth plan, designed to fit the sharp angle of Cavern Road, which runs to the left.

The house stands three storeys tall and is two windows wide. The early 20th-century shop front spans the entire ground storey, featuring a pair of display windows that are canted in the center towards recessed three-quarter-glazed doors. The windows are set on glazed brown tile plinths and include transom-lights with patterned leaded glazing, along with a similar fanlight above the doorway that has wooden glazing bars. Flanking pilasters and an entablature complete the shop front.

The upper-storey windows are small-paned sashes, with 6 over 6 panes in the second storey and 3 over 6 panes in the third storey. A deep flat eaves-cornice extends around the left side wall towards Cavern Road, which has no windows but features a single doorway. The rear wall contains a narrow window with an 8-paned fixed sash. The building is included for its group value.
