Description

The gatehouse, built around 1900, is located approximately 20 meters west-northwest of the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Higher Brixham. It is constructed of stone rubble with red sandstone dressings and features a flat concrete roof over the central section. The design resembles a Gothic folly, with a wide, covered passage in the center flanked by two small roofless chambers.

The main feature is a tall, wide pointed arch at the center, with smaller pointed arches on either side. The arch to the right is chamfered and has worn pyramid stops. At each end of the structure, there are segmental-headed windows filled with iron grilles. The gatehouse is topped with a battlemented parapet, featuring moulded stone battlements above the main arch.

Inside the main arch, there are a pair of iron gateposts adorned with open Gothic tracery and crenellated tops, although the centers of the posts are now encased in concrete. The gates themselves also feature Gothic tracery. Within the passage, pointed-arched doorways are located in each side wall, and the ceiling is supported by beaded beams and joists. The rear arch mirrors the front arch, and the small side arches have iron gates with decorated finials. Iron railings of a similar design define the paths leading to the central passage.

Historical photographs from around 1896 show a different gatehouse design, which included a timber-framed structure above the gates and cottages on either side.
