Description
The former aviary, now a house, is located approximately 11 meters northeast of Gramercy Hall School. It was likely built around 1843 and extended in the late 20th century. The building features solid rendered walls and a front portico made of limestone, probably Bath stone, topped with a hipped slated roof. It is a small rectangular structure with splayed corners.
At the southeast end, the decorative portico relates to the adjacent Italian garden and is accessed by curved flights of steps on either side, leading to side entrances. The portico is supported by Doric pilasters and includes an entablature and triangular pediment. The inner faces of the pilasters have subsidiary pilasters with scroll-brackets that support the entablature. Behind the portico, there is a tall recess in the main wall containing a panelled pedestal. Each side wall has a plain doorway with a blank panel above, both inside and out.
The floor is stone-paved, extending to curved flights of stone steps on either side, which are protected by a plain iron railing with thin square balusters that are voluted at the outer end. A stone rubble wall, faced with ashlar on the outside and featuring the remains of a pilaster at the left-hand end, borders the front of the steps at the level of the portico. The rest of the building is plain, with doorways in the splayed corners; the rear right doorway has chamfered and stopped jambs. The windows are 2-light wood casements with either 3 or 8 panes per light. The late 20th-century addition has small-paned wood casements and appears to be only superficially attached to the original structure. The front of the building is designed to be viewed from the top of the Italian Garden located on the southeast side.
